“Gigante” sounds a lot manlier than “giant”, doesn’t it? Hee-GAHN-tay.
This is my submission for the Iron Giant Project.
Contrary to my assumed preconceptions of yours, this was not my first design for the drawing. It was actually as follows:
See that face? It is the face of sadness, unsatisfaction, and bad acting. While drawing this one, I kept thinking “bleh… well when I ink this, it will totally improve!”. It never improved. So back to the drawing board I went! And churned this new son of awesomeness! Time to break it down like -science term that breaks down compounds-. Hah!
Inkedy doo dah! I actually went over this to fancify the lines by varying their widths, but scrapped that copy because I wanted to avoid emphasizing the line in this piece so it’s less comic book-y. (Although I ended up slightly emphasizing the line anyway…)
Base colors! I did something different than usual: I added subtle gradients to almost all of the Iron Giant’s parts (instead of just adding a flat color). I saw this technique, uh, well I see it in many places, so I decided to try it. I like the results, but it took sooo much longer to do. NEXT TIME I’ll try this method.
First/Secondary/Cast shadows! I’m now realizing I forgot to put a cast shadow on his hips. Let’s pretend the light is angled in such a way that his hips don’t need a cast shadow! Huzzah!..
Hogarth gets the color treatment while the background is filled in with a three-point gradient!
Used gradients combined with “Darken” and “Color burn”! If you can’t see the differences between these images, cross your eyes and try again. (This technique won’t help you see the differences, but you sure will look mighty silly.) I used these gradient layers to uh… add this kind of effect thing… yeah I don’t really know my reasoning behind this. I just tried to make it look better with layers of lighting, I’m not sure how effective it was…
I made another layer for the giant’s eyes to put over top the gradients. Then I used a metallic texture to spice up the background (used Hard Light).
The last ingredient was a nice lil title and SHABOOM we have a delicious Iron Giant piece.
I’m gonna pull the Washington card and be honest with you: I think this piece is pretty odd. I LIKE it, but uh… I dunno, it’s weird have TIG and Hogarth in some purple void. Bleh. Speaking of which, Hogarth gave me troubles to no end. I probably should’ve spent more time designing him.
I’ll do more drawings like this so I can get more familiar with Photoshop, and maybe one day we can become really great friends.
I MIIIGHT draw the following:
- Dante from Sheldon (in Stickboy form)
- Someone from Avatar (Last Airbender BUHH clarifying that every time might get annoying)
- Someone from Lackadaisy
- Axe Cop
…pretty much anything I really like. If you have any suggestions as to what I should draw next, just tell me and I’ll be like “hey, that’s a good idea!”.
Now to get back to working on 3D art stuff. FORTYFIVE NINETY FORTYFIVE NINETY FORTYFIVE NINETY FORTYFIVE NINETY WHY WON’T YOU STOP
